What the client wanted to achieve
As an existing client we already knew that this outstanding area to the project required a suitable resin floor finish, as this was an industrial canteen/kitchen and the client wanted to provide almost a “sleek” environment for the staff what was going to be a gloss coloured resin coating originally was up-sold to a system that would not only lift the area but with the lighting that had been installed the system also give the “Wow” factor, as you can see from the pictures this canteen certainly provided a tasty image.
The solution
Once Contact Flooring and the client had agreed the change on the decorative finish we lightly ground the concrete not to create preparation marks in the surface as the resin flakes were only going into a solvent free high build resin coating, once the mechanical preparation had been carried out and the high build epoxy resin coating had been installed the flakes were fully blinded into the resin surface and left to cure over-night. The next day was a case of simply removing the excess flakes which was recovered and then a polyurethane UV Stable clear seal coat was applied and again allowed to cure overnight. With all this complete the client was totally satisfied and the remainder of the canteen fit out could commence, another job completed and another happy customer.

What is a resin flake floor?
A resin flake floor is a resin system with decorative flakes broadcast into it. On this 90m² Derby canteen, a solvent-free high-build epoxy resin was applied and flakes were fully blinded into the surface, left to cure overnight, then the excess was removed and a UV-stable polyurethane clear seal coat was applied over the top.
Is a flake floor a good choice for a staff canteen or kitchen?
Yes, it can be a strong choice where appearance matters as well as performance. This client originally planned a gloss coloured resin coating for its industrial canteen and kitchen, but upgraded to a flake system because it suited the installed lighting and gave the room a more striking look. The client was satisfied and the fit-out continued.
Why is a clear polyurethane seal coat applied over a flake floor?
The clear seal coat locks in the broadcast flakes and finishes the surface. On this project a UV-stable polyurethane clear seal was applied once the excess flakes had been removed from the cured epoxy, and it was left to cure overnight before the canteen fit-out carried on.
How is concrete prepared for a resin flake floor?
For this Derby canteen the concrete was given a light grind, carried out without leaving preparation marks. Because the flake system is a decorative finish in a visible space, careful preparation helps the result look right. The solvent-free high-build epoxy and flakes were then applied directly onto the prepared surface.
